KEMS got his introduction to hip hop before age 10 from the legendary Uncle Al (not the Miami Bass legend, but his actual uncle, Al). Occasionally playing the role of DJ, Al’s claim to fame was of a music enthusiast, which included introducing his young nephew to hip hop music. KEMS was hooked and did everything in his power to find out all he could about this music called rap. This proved to be a difficult task growing up in rural Central Florida where mullets, racial tension, and high school football were the local pastimes. Through the obstacles though, KEMS was lucky enough to find a few like minded individuals and quickly formed his first rap crew at age 12.
Fast forwarding to sophomore year in high school, KEMS was introduced to DJing and began making ties with all the local DJs. It was the next logical step in the progression. From there began a thirst to pick up every instrumental he could find to rhyme over, as well as putting together the occasional mixtape for the crew. As time passed, KEMS became more infatuated with DJing and less involved with rhyming, recognizing that the spotlight on the mic was neither fulfilling nor exciting for him. After this realization, the main focuses became DJing and digging for vinyl. These two activities took him through the remainder of his high school years on through his university life. After receiving his college degree, KEMS relocated to South Florida in 2001 and hooked up with future Hoverock labelmates PFM and Lumin. While the foundations for Hoverock were being built, KEMS and Lumin began to build a name as one of the best DJ duos in the area and have been blessed to share the stage with many legendary acts in and out of the Hip Hop realm. KEMS still holds down weekly residencies as well as the occasional guest spots at shows and other clubs in the South Florida area.
Utilizing his growing name recognition, he decided it was time to make an impact in the hip hop culture through a different avenue. KEMS, along with long time friend PFM, jumped at the chance to take ownership of the Hoverock label when the opportunity arose. Already a few releases deep, the focus for quality and an unquenchable desire for progression has KEMS and his labelmates working harder than ever to continue breaking new ground and creating their own niche with an original and unmistakable sound. KEMS is looking forward to seeing the label prosper in this ever-changing musical landscape and is dedicated to the grind required to accomplish that. Typically one to shy away from the “artist” title, KEMS will however pop up with the occasional scratching credit on a Hoverock track, mastermind a mixtape from time to time, or if the planets align correctly will even drop a guest verse on one of the Hoverock family projects. KEMS is content with staying in the background and knowing that his contribution will be felt and more importantly heard.
