Surrounded by both the beauty and gaudiness of Miami, resides Lumin- the man behind Oddinhuman Music and The Slowdown Studio. Disappointed with this musical era so rich in technology and accessibility but lacking in experimentation and substance, he is on a mission to envelope the listener with his signature futuristic and expressive sound. Armed with his modest but efficient collection of vintage studio equipment and an extensive vinyl collection, Lumin's goal remains at the forefront: to spark the imagination through sound and be fresh while doing it.
A meeting of minds occurred between Lumin and future label mate PFM in 2002. What initially began with open mics and listening to hip hop records grew into exchanging verses, critiques, and production tips. This evolved into their first collaboration on the Hoverock label's debut release entitled Kite Crucifix Beyond: Valium 1. Lumin's contribution included a track on the compilation as well as engineering duties for the majority of the project. Since then, he has taken on the role of Hoverock engineer, working out of his own studio, The Slowdown, appropriately named due to its laid back vibe and comfortable atmosphere.
Not only is Lumin comfortable in the studio, he is also in his element behind a pair of turntables. In 2003, he was introduced to Hoverock DJ Kems while attending a hip hop show. Learning of similar tastes in music, the meeting marked the start of a dynamic DJ duo that through the years has rocked the crowds locally in Miami at weekly gigs and concerts. On his journey, he has had the pleasure to share the stage with KRS One, Digable Planets, Jeru the Damaja, Rob Swift, King Britt, Rich Medina, Supreme La Rock, Vikter Duplaix and countless other well known talent. Lumin has had the opportunity to play in clubs across the United States- from New York City to Seattle and everywhere in between. His seamless mix of soul, funk, hip hop, disco, house and every genre in between moves the feet and touches the soul of the discerning music lover.
“In the studio I want to create beautiful music, and while in the DJ booth, continue to play the music that moves me. It really isn’t any more complicated than that. I have so much to record and release, not only for my own Oddinhuman Music label but for others as well. As for DJ gigs, as long as there are still people who love and yearn for good music, I know that I will have the opportunities and outlets to play all the amazing music I’ve come across.” -Lumin
